Swamp Saturday Hikes

$2 per person (free for Friends of Phinizy)

Enjoy a guided, leisurely hike through approximately 2.5 miles of nature park trails. Children & adults will enjoy viewing the variety of wildlife and learning about the diverse plant life & importance of urban wetland ecology. Please wear comfortable closed toe shoes & bring water to drink. Strollers are welcome. No dogs, please. We leave from the Swamp Shop & Visitor’s Center at 9:30AM.
Spaces are limited. Free for children ages 3 and under.

Fall Festival

Playing in the leaves? Storytelling? Making apple cider? Creating art out of nature? What else would you think of to celebrate fall?

Join us for the beginnings of many seasonal festivals to come as we celebrate the Theatre-in-the-Woods and the space that will become known to be the Forest Play area of the Children’s Garden.

Full Moon Hike

Come see the garden come alive at night! Each hike will focus on a different topic such as the moon, constellations, or nocturnal creatures. Bring family and friends of all ages along to enjoy the mysterious world of nature at night!

Salamander & Stream Ecology Ramble

Join husband and wife herpetology team, Matt Elliott and Stacy Smith, for a ramble along and in the streams and wet areas of the Garden. You’ll learn about where salamanders are found around Athens and about the habitat conditions they need to survive and thrive. Come ready to get wet and dirty. Families are welcome. Insect repellents are discouraged when handling these fragile creatures.

Pokemon Go for a Night Hike

Enjoy a pet friendly ranger led night hike in search of nocturnal animals and the elusive Pokemon. We will also explore the C.C.C. trails and buildings. You will need to bring your own smartphone. We will meet at our park office, which is also a Pokestop.

Full Moon Hike – Pokemon Hunt

The State Botanical Gardens is hosting a Full Moon Hike which will explore the wonders of nature in the dark. It would also be a great time to explore and catch some Pokémon, however, this is not a official Pokémon event so make sure you aren’t disruptive to the other patrons.

Frogging (And Other Night Sounds) by Kayak

Join Environmental Outreach Coordinator, Linda May, for this nighttime symphony performed by a host of nocturnal creatures on Lake Rutledge after dark. Frogs, crickets, and maybe an owl or two, may be heard on this easy paddle. Enjoy the stars after the sun goes down if the night sky is clear. Space is limited, please pre-register.

Linda May is the Environmental Outreach Coordinator with Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division. She is also a frog expert and takes part in frog surveys throughout the state every year. Linda will discuss the native common frogs found around Lake Rutledge and how to identify them by ear.

Hike and Craft

Join the naturalist on a hike lasting about one hour and then create a craft as a souvenir. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Bring plenty of water. Crafts will be $2, no fee to hike. Remember, these hikes will try different trails at Mistletoe, so arrive a little early to find out where each month�s hike is starting.
